The first episode of Smackdown Live in 2018 featured a Dejavu from the previous show that eventually led to a shocking outcome in the night’s main event.
In the broadcast, The Lass Kicker Becky Lynch returned alongside Naomi and Charlotte Flair, who mounted on The Riott Squad after their victory over The Welcoming Committee.
Chad Gable and Shelton Benjamin were a length away from securing the Smackdown Down Tag Team Titles after a miscalculated pin was called in.
Aiden English squared off with Xavier Woods while The Bludgeon Brothers battled Breezango for the third consecutive time.
Now, let’s take a look at the full recap of this week’s episode of Smackdown Live.
AJ STYLES KICK OFF SMACKDOWN LIVE WITH SHANE AND BRYAN.
The Phenomenal WWE champion AJ Styles kicked off the first SmackDown Live for 2018, drawing an outstanding ovation from the crowd as he made his way to the ring.
Styles began with a complaint about his defeat to Kevin Owens during last week’s encounter, calling the attention of the management.
As General Manager Daniel Bryan made his way to the ring, Commissioner Shane Mcinterruptedrupted with an agenda of his own. He cut off Bryan on numerous occasions, never giving the “Yes” man the opportunity to explain his intentions.
However, Shane apologised for AJ Styles’ defeat to Kevin Owens from last week’s encounter; stating that he would be in The Phenomenal One’s corner for the night’s main event between Styles and Sami Zayn.
Eventually, General Manager Daniel Bryan countered with an intent of his own, revealing that he would not only allow Owens to be at ringside but that he too would be at ringside tonight.
THE USOS VS. BENJAMIN AND GABLE (SmackDown Tag Team Title Match)
This week, No. 1 Contenders Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable battled The Usos for their Smackdown Tag Team Championships.
The match evolved at a high pace as both teams slugged it out in the early stages.
After a long run of back-and-forths, Gable and Benjamin seemingly won the championships, but after a review from the replay, the bout was restarted.
In the end, a double kick and a big slash from the top rope allowed the twins to retain their Tag Team championships.
The Usos defeated Shelton Benjamin and Chad Gable to retain their Smackdown Tag Team Championships.
BREEZANGO VS. THE BLUDGEON BROTHERS.
After weeks of several rematches between both teams, Breezango returned this Tuesday night for another opportunity against Harper and Rowan in Tag Team action.
Before the match started, The Bludgeon Brothers drew first-blood, mauling Tyler Breeze and Breezango, leaving them defenceless.
The Ascension followed afterwards, hitting the ring in an attempt to rescue their cronies.
In the end, Konnor and Victor also met the same fate as the former Wyatt Brothers stood tall over their preys.
XAVIER WOODS VS. AIDEN ENGLISH (United States Championship Tournament Match)
This week, The United States Championship tournament featured Xavier Woods of The New Day and ‘The Drama King’ Aiden English in singles competition.
As Jinder Mahal and The Singh Brothers watched from backstage, awaiting The Maharaja’s next challenge in the next round, English continually grounded his opponent in the early stages.
An opening eventually presented itself for the former Tag Team Champion, who sent English crashing unto the canvas.
A top rope elbow drop from Woods ended English’s hopes for the US championship glory.

THE RIOTT SQUAD VS. THE WELCOMING COMMITTEE.
A week after their previous encounter, Natalya, Carmella, Lana and Tamina attempted to even the odds by battling The Riott Squad in a 6-Women Tag Team match.
With Lana at ringside, The Queen of NeidHarts and her cronies held the early advantage as they rammed over Logan, Riott and Morgan with full aggression; only for the Riott Squad to take over after the break.
After a series of back-and-forths between both teams, Sarah Logan scored the victory for her team, leaving The Welcoming Committee in despair.
After the eventful turnout, Ruby Riott announced that her team will be entering the Women’s Royal Rumble this January 28; before Charlotte Flair interrupted.
‘The Queen’ wasted no time in introducing two others: Naomi and the returning Becky Lynch; and together, the trio hit the ring and took the fight to the Riott Squad.
In the end, the Heels bailed out and fled the scene while the three 1-time Smackdown Women’s Champions stood tall.

AJ STYLES VS. SAMI ZAYN (Non-Title Match)
As expected, an infringement occurred which resulted in Kevin Owen’s ejection call by Commissioner Shane McMahon.
And to a stunning surprise, General Manager Daniel Bryan picked up a mic and announced that Shane should also exit ringside along with Owens to even the playing field. This distraction then allowed Sami Zayn to take advantage of the situation; thereby pinning the WWE Champion via a Helluva Kick for the upset victory.
After the match, a frustrated Styles called on his superiors to book him against Owens and Zayn in a handicap match, which Bryan later did.
In the end, The Champ put his WWE Championship up for grabs at Royal Rumble.
Sami Zayn defeated AJ Styles via pinfall.
